Blue Sky Grille, Pepsi Center, Denver, CO - Bunkhouse Plank® Oak
The Blue Sky Grill is not just another arena sports bar. Far from it. In fact, once you've stepped into the Blue Sky Grill you could be in an upscale mountain lodge far from anywhere. The restaurant is modeled after Yellowstone National Park's Old Faithful Lodge and Pepsi Center owner Stan Kroenke's own Q Creek Ranch in Wyoming. The Blue Sky Grill is open to the general public as well as ticketholders before and after events. HOK Sport + Venue + Event (now Populous™), the architecture firm that designed the Pepsi Center, also piloted the design of the Blue Sky Grill.
"When we were building it, we kept coming back to the words 'lodge' and 'comfortable. We wanted it to be a place where you want to hang out." - Bill Pruter, Pepsi Center VP of arena development (Rocky Mountain News, 02.02.02)
"As a photographer, I often find myself in situations that call for me to use my talents to improve upon the subject matter. In this situation I was challenged to capture the essence of the Blue Sky Grill without subtracting from it. My assistant and I spent a total of 38 hours to shoot nine 4x5 color images. This is more than double our average time per image. A myriad of detail-oriented work was required on our end so as not to over- or under-light, and to accurately capture the details contributed by the many different elements. The ambiance created is from the total effect of the reclaimed woods, lighting, furnishings and artwork to the tiniest of details; you are transported to a space that rivals any western-style mountain lodge. It was a welcomed challenge to precisely document this awesome space." - Jackie Shumaker, owner of Jackie Shumaker Photography.
Galyan's Trading Company, The Washingtonian, Gaithersburg, MD - Antique Oak
Galyan's is the most unique, rapidly growing sporting goods store in the world. They are passionate about sports and the outdoors, and they offer the best merchandise from top brands. What started as a grocery store with few hardware and sports related products soon evolved into a complete sporting goods store and then, after being purchased by The Limited Inc. in July 1995, a chain of stores. Since its purchase, Galyan's has expanded to 11 stores.
UPDATE: Galyan's was sold to Dick's Sporting Goods in 2004. Some stores have been closed, but our pictures captured the store at its finest with a climbing wall (visible in the back of the store, and a running track around the messanine.
