Aged Woods, Inc. and Aged Woods®

Aged Woods, Inc, was started in 1984 by Donald Sprenkle, Jr. as First Capitol Wood Products, Inc. He had been restoring an old stone farmhouse in southern York County and wanted to use cypress in his bathroom and shower. He contacted a local “used wood dealer”, as they were known then, and contracted to buy a small quantity of cypress removed from mushroom houses in southeastern Pennsylvania.

When many of his friends expressed interest in buying some as well, a light went on in his head. A local advertising agency was contacted, a name and logo were created and a brochure was designed. While Don was not the first to turn barn wood into flooring, he was one of the first to apply modern marketing techniques to it and raise the public consciousness about recycling.

In April of 1986, Jeffrey Horn became a partner and vice president. In 4Q88, he became the sole shareholder and President, the position he holds to this day. Since the company had become synonomous with its trademarked product and answered the telephone with it almost from the beginning, Jeffrey changed the name of the company to Aged Woods (Inc).

The company sells it’s flooring products throughout the world. International sales include accounts in Israel, Singapore, England, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. While a great percentage of the company’s sales are for residences, the fastest growing (and most visible) category is commercial applications.

Most of the raw materials for Aged Woods® are reclaimed from agricultural out-buildings, i.e. barns, ranging in age from 75 years to as much as 200 years. Some of the salvaged wood was trees of the virgin forests, trees that were alive when our ancestors arrived. Having grown during a period of unique ecological balance, this wood has a tighter grain than the much more rapidly growing trees of today.

From these recycled old woods emerges a precision-milled plank that retains the patina and character imparted by the signs of old-time craftsmen and decades of wind, rain and sun. The planks are divided into Antique and Antique Distressed® products. It is not grading in the traditional sense, but a recognition of the varying degrees of weathering that occurred.

Yesteryear® brand flooring is made from specially selected, recently harvested wood. It is available in wide widths and long lengths that are not possible with reclaimed wood and at a lower price point.

In late 2007 the company introduced ERA® – Engineered Reclaimed Antique – flooring. This product has a 3mm wear layer of authentic ERA endgrain reclaimed antique wood over a nine layer substrate of fast-growing birch held together by formaldehyde-free adhesive. The planks are prefinished with a 7-coat, high-abrasion resistance aluminum oxide finish system. Included is a lifetime structural integrity warranty and a 20-year residential finish warranty.
