Engineered Wood Flooring – Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are your reclaimed wood floors available as engineered flooring?

A: Yes, we offer most of our products in engineered versions, which we call ERA™ – Engineered Reclaimed Antique wood flooring. You can find the ERA™ logo and specifications on our individual product pages.

Q: What are the advantages of using engineered wood flooring over solid wood?

A: There are several advantages to using engineered wood flooring over solid wood in certain installations. Firstly, engineered flooring is designed to resist moisture and limit expansion and contraction from changes in humidity levels, making it a better choice for basements and below-grade spaces that tend to be more humid. Secondly, the multiple layers of wood in engineered flooring provide stability and reduce the effects of moisture changes, which means it can be installed over concrete slabs, which is typically not recommended for solid wood flooring. Finally, engineered wood flooring can also be used for wider planks than what is recommended for solid wood in some locations.

Q: Why should I use engineered wood flooring in my basement?

A: Basements and below-grade spaces tend to have higher humidity levels, which can cause solid wood flooring to expand and contract excessively, leading to warping and other damage. Engineered wood flooring is designed to resist moisture and limit expansion and contraction, making it a better choice for these environments. Additionally, the stability of engineered wood flooring means it can be installed over concrete slabs, which is often present in basements.

Q: Is there a price difference between your solid and engineered versions of the same products?

A: Yes, the engineered versions of our reclaimed wood flooring are typically priced slightly higher than the equivalent solid versions. On average, the price difference is around $1.50 . The cost of the preferred substrate for engineered wood flooring, Baltic Birch plywood, is currently elevated due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. (Ukraine and Russia are the primary suppliers.)
